Andy's update

Hello all,
As most of you know Sandy is in the hospital currently. She went to her primary care doctor last Tuesday due to troubles breathing and pain in her lower back still, which she waits to see a doctor until she physically cannot do things on her own. Needless to say he admitted her and we are at MTMC room 545. I've been trying to keep things updated on facebook, but know that not everyone has that or is my friend on their. First off I'll start with the good news before I go in detail on what is currently medically going on. Sandy has a friend in Indiana that she grew up with and is involved in a small group at church there. They have been praying for Sandy and us and when they found out that I wrecked the van and were looking for a vehicle a young couple whome I had the pleasure of meeting decided to loan us a car for the time being and said it just sits in their garage most of the time. That was and is amazing from people we do not even know. Thank you all again it is nice to be mobile once again.

Medically: Sandy is in the hospital due to uncontrollable lower back pain, uncontrollable nausea, having a difficult time breathing, being dizzy. Most of this is explained from the tumors currently and the current trial she is on either not working or working very slow at this time from the last hospital visit. Yesterday she had an MRI of her back/spine area to see what was causing the pain. This morning the oncologist came in and said that there are spots on her spine/ pelvic area. He also said that she is to stop the currently trial now and they will do radiation on the lower back to help ease the pain, but it may take a couple weeks for that to kick in. He also state that by doing the radiation and decreasing the pain it will in turn be able to get her off of some of the pain medications soon and should help ease some of the nausea. They all seem very dependant on each other to me but they are the experts and I let them do their work. Sometimes it feels as if I could have my medical degree by now. We have also spoken with palliative care team here which is a fancy word for help get you comfortable and ease your symptoms team. They are in the process of concocting a plan to help with the medications and possibly reduce some by getting some that work better for her and so forth.

We did get a refferal to speak with hospic over the weekend, but after speaking with a very nice nurse came to the conclusion that it is not an option yet. Sandy and all of us surrounding her still have fight left in us and are not willing to lay down and just stay comfortable. The option now is trying to get hooked up with a good home health program that works well with her doctors and let them help us around with Sandy and things at home.

Sandy does enjoy visitors and cards or just thoughts and prayers. Right now she is at MTMC in Murfreesboro in room 545. Hopefully they can get things in order for us and we will be able to go home soon. This is getting kind of long and drawn out but I have to say thank you to my parents for coming down and spending the week helping out, Sandy's parents and family for helping out, all the friends and family that have come to visit or praying, all the nurses and doctors at MTMC and TN oncology everywhere in between they are all amazing.

First, thank you Andy for the update and I hope you and the kids are doing well.

And Sandy-- you are INCREDIBLY strong and that strength is what is going to help you beat this. People do it all the time. My father had cancer and we would read through success stories everyday just to help stay in the mindset that, against the odds, you can beat it.

Keep fighting! You are a huge inspiration.

Sandy & Family -
Wow... this is never easy. We often spend hours, days, weeks and years trying to figure out why things like this happen. Sometimes we never know. Sometimes we find out much later in life - either we or our families realize some amazing epiphiny about the situation that doesn't make sense until years later, and then it clicks - we realize the lesson we were supposed to have learned.
But learning lessons isn't easy when you're dealing with the pain and having to struggle for every breath. I hope all the love you're receiving through this blog via the lovebomb team makes it easier to see the lesson today.
From where I sit, here in Chicago, I see an amazing woman, an amazing family, facing amazing trials. And through it all, I imagine the amazing support, love and care that's being offered. I see amazing patience, endurance and comittment being shown. And, the lesson for me is that, even though we'll likely never meet, you have reminded me of the value of life, family and courage. Knowing what you're going through teaches me the lesson of gratitude. You, Sandy, are helping to shape better lives simply by being you. That's an amazing thing.
Keep up your amazing fight. My the love, energy and prayers you're receiving help you endure this trial and I have every confidence, no matter which direction things go, you'll come off victorious.
Much love,

I want you to know that you are already SO much stronger than so many people -- as strong as any one person could hope to be. I am thinking of you and praying for you and hoping that this message helps to keep your spirits up, even in the smallest way. You are such an incredible inspiration. Andy and Sandy,
My husband had stage 4 head and neck cancer 11 years ago. The doctor told him he had a maximum of 2 years even with surgery, radiation, and chemo. As I said, that was 11 years ago and he is strong and healthy today. The doctor didn't factor in the miracle of healing.

I lift this precious family to you. I ask for strength and comfort and healing. Only you can heal because it is by your stripes, Jesus, that we are healed. My heart aches for this family, Lord, and I beseech you to work a miracle for them. I ask you to give them a blessed extention of their time together here on Earth so that the little ones can grow up with their mother and father. I thank you that you hear and answer when your children cry out to you. I ask according to the power Jesus gave us to pray in his name and believe it would be done, Amen.

Hey Sandy,

I can't imagine everything that you're feeling and going through right now, but I wanted to drop in and letting ya know that we're thinking about you and your family. You are loved.

Something from Thomas Merton for ya:

"At the center of our being is a point of nothingness which is untouched by sin and by illusion, a point of pure truth, a point or spark which belongs entirely to God, which is never at our disposal, from which God disposes of our lives, which is inaccessible to the fantasies of our mind or the brutalities of our will. This little point of nothingness and of absolute poverty is the pure glory of God in us. It is, so to speak, His name written in us. As our poverty, as our indigence, as our dependence, as our son-ship, it is like a pure diamond blazing with the invisible light of heaven. It is in everybody. And if we could see it we would see these billions of points of light coming together in the face and blaze of a sun that would make all the darkness and cruelty of life vanish completely. I have no program for this seeing; is it only given. But the Gate of Heaven is everywhere."

My Grandmother who struggled with so many health problems in the end of her life - used to always tell me,"I just will it away. I tell it to go away." and at the time I thought it seemed silly but looking back on it now I realize she had something going for her. She survived so many health issues we thought would be the end of her and I will always hold that thought close to me.

My favorite person in the world was recently diagnosed with both lupus and cancer. She is young and a mother of 6. Hopefully, her situation lends hope. She just went in for her 3rd surgery and the doctors said, 'It couldn't be done..we can't remove it all and you'll need chemo/radiation'. There is a team of us praying and her results are nothing short of a miracle. The doctors DID get it all, she doesn't need chemo/radiation and her lupus has gone into remission. I will pray for you the prayers I prayed for her and know that my God is HUGE, He can still heal in miraculous ways. Sending hope and love.

I admire the courage it takes to go through not one, but two major medical issues. Here's some love and hope they get the pain and nausea under control soon.

One thing about people, they are there when you really, truly need them. I hope the Love Bomb Team can lighten the burden for you each time you read the messages. There are a lot more people rooting for you than you know.

Many many hugs and positive thoughts coming your way.

Hi Sandy, I'm a 26 year old from Texas. It took a moment as I was reading this to realize we're the same age. Then I thought about my life, and it struck me how unfair life can really be. I can't imagine what it's like to be in your shoes and it breaks my heart that you have to go through this. I'm also a nursing student, and I hope it provides some measure of comfort to know that people like you always make my day because your attitude and outlook on life despite what you're going through are so inspiring.
I hope the love and prayers being sent your way help you get through when you're tired and times are toughest.
I hope you beat this and get to go home and enjoy some much deserved quality time with your wonderful husband and kiddos.
